Gaming... A Blast from the PC Past
I've been working on/with computers for over 25 years now.
Every so often, I stumble upon something that I remember absolutely fascinated me when I saw it the first time. This is one of those things.
I remember playing games with our first Sound Blaster. I remember loading in the Wing Commander II Speech Pack that my Dad bought for us, making it the first game with full character speech.
We were blown away.
As computers and gaming continue moving forward, I get the sense that today's kids (listen to me, how old am I??) are not as fascinated by technology. But why should they be? A smartphone or a computer are about as ubiquitous now as a washing machine or a microwave. Simply a part of our lives.
And meanwhile, the nostalgia I experience when watching the Sound Blaster Pro audio demo would be overshadowed by its rudimentary nature for others.
Yup, it's official. I'm old!
On the Tubez... Bye Bye Plurk
Plurk is officially going the way of the dodo for me.
The link to my Plurk profile here on Dawg|Net (in the top-right corner) actually disappeared some time ago.
I might pop in occasionally to see what's up with the few people I'm still following. But otherwise, I already have contact with most through Google+, Facebook, or Twitter. There isn't much reason to continue supporting it, and I won't be posting there at all.
Plus, Plurk is on a continual downhill slide. Their userbase is shrinking (though the developers would probably claim otherwise) and the platform isn't really moving forward. Which is unfortunate, because I think Plurk is unique and had something special going for it, that has since fizzled out and likely not recoverable.
Ultimately they didn't listen well to their users, they didn't continue to innovate, and they didn't make use of the resources they had at their disposal. PlurkBuddy, anyone?
Ah well. Hello Facebook, Twitter and Google+!
I wonder if one of you will be next?

On the Tubez... Google+ First Impressions
If you follow any sort of tech/internet/social networking related websites, then you have already heard about Google+. Maybe you're even a little bit excited about it!
Hopefully you are. Because if the limited version that's open right now is any indication, Google is moving in the right direction.
It's no secret that Google has had something in the works in the social realms for some time now. Something that many hoped might usurp the kingpin of all social networking sites, Facebook. But Google has some very big shoes to fill. Let's take a look at how Google+ works, and how it thus far compares to its biggest competitor.
Dawg Digs... Cloud Save
"The Cloud" is becoming an increasingly popular place these days. More and more people are placing their photos, music and other files online, accessible from wherever they need them.
What's sometimes lacking is an easy way to get files that are already on the net to your cloud location of choice. What ends up happening is a two or three step process of downloading the file you need, then reuploading it via a web interface or mobile/desktop app.
Convenience FTL!!
But, if you're a Chrome user, it doesn't have to be this way...
